Chapter 22

Henry

Over the next four days, Henry felt the full moon approaching. Paxton was still training him, but would it be enough? He had a feeling that he'd be spending the full moon in Paxton's basement cage for his protection and the protection of others. Henry was more at peace with himself after each meditative session with Paxton. Although he was still a fairly nervous and paranoid man, Henry's confidence was slowly building. He saw the world in a different, less threatening light.

After a meditation session, Paxton and Henry were getting ready to head out and grab dinner together when there was an urgent knock on Paxton's door. With a frown, Paxton went to answer it.

Lucas stood on the step.

Judging by his hardened expression, he wasn't just dropping by.

Lucas swept inside of the apartment, not bothering to remove his shoes as he slammed the door behind him. “Paxton, the hunters are on the move.”

Henry's blood ran cold as he stared between the brothers.

“What?” Paxton exclaimed, folding his arms.

“Jake was attacked last night,” Lucas growled. “In his own fuckin' home! The bastards shot him. He managed to get away after killing one of them. The doc says he'll live since the bullet didn't pierce anything vital.”

Paxton shook with rage, although he calmed himself. “He killed one of the hunters?”

“It was kill or be killed! Don't worry. I've called Dyson to help cover it up.”

Paxton shook his head. “They've never been that bold.”

“They're not fuckin' playing around now. You know what? Jake said he smelled wolf on the hunters. He didn't recognize the scent. Those bastards probably got to another one before trying to off Jake.”

Paxton ran his hands through his curly hair. “It doesn't make sense for them to change their tactics like that! Do you think these were newbies? Are they working independently?”

“I don't know but it's not going to stop here, Paxton,” Lucas uttered, catching his brother's eyes. “We need to prepare ourselves in case they try to take out more of us. We can't let ourselves be wiped out by the pricks.”

“It doesn't have to come down to bloodshed. We have connections! We can work something out to try and stop them in their tracks.”

“That's done nothing for us so far. What makes you think it'll work now?”

“Do you think we'd be here today if I didn't work with people to put protection in place? Do you think you've been that stealthy or lucky? Don't be so full of yourself.”

Lucas surged forward and grabbed Paxton by the jacket, shoving him roughly into the nearest wall. Henry flinched at the sound and instantly jumped in to try and get Lucas off Paxton.

“Stay back!” Paxton snarled at Henry. He gripped Lucas' arms, not trying to pull away from the wall. “See, Lucas? You're too quick to get into a fight. If you act like this with hunters around, you'll get yourself killed! Not only that but you'll bring the rest of your pack – our friends – into it.”

The two brothers locked eyes.
